Gratis Internet, the company that started with Free Condoms and earned their mark giving away Free Ipods, are closing up shop.

It appears that the lawsuit filed by Elliot Spitzer, New York state Attorney General, affected them tremendously. Being an ex-employee of this company, I saw this coming, primarily due to the fact that they hired a COO from a completely different industry, who after 3 months, still didn't understand how the company generated revenue! Just goes to show, a business model based on breakage, will eventually break.

All of my condolences go out to my ex co-workers, half of which were laid off this week. Peter Martin, one of the co-founders left the company last week.

Another internet saga comes to an end.

Gratis R.I.P.

PS: Here is supporting documentation. Besides the fact that half off the staff has been laid off, and "more cuts coming" whispers are heard through the galley, the lawsuit filled against Gratis request at minumum $500 per New York residents email address in their database. As NYC was one of their top cities in a database of over 150 million email addresses, you do the math.

Do you have any supporting evidence beyond your account?

How do we know you worked for Freepay, and what does the "documentation" prove? Yes, a lawsuit went down but I don't see where it says that they're closing.

The document to which you provided a link isn't new. (It's been seen in the freebie community for months) Do you have anything beyond that to support your claim?

Exactly what do you want as proof?
Gratis has run it's course, it's business model does not work. They have spent all the money and are now sucking the bones dry. Other than the fact that half the staff has been fired, and this has been over a year in the making, I do not have "proof". It'll will be proof enough when the web sites suddenly dissapear. They have no more customer service personnel, or fulfilment staff, if you were already expecting something, don't, all you will get is an email.

You mant proof? If you have an account with Gratis, you should know their email domain; email them regarding the status of their company, or the status of your account, and see what you get.

The Attorney General of NY is "Eliot" Spitzer, not "David" Spitzer.
That's according to the fourth line of your hyperlinked documentation.

That's what you get for working with Peter and Rob. As someone who has known them for ages, I can tell you they aren't honest and were only looking out for themselves.

If they could they would have done a lot more damage. They've probably even screwed their employees. I am glad they got what they deserved and Internationally got called out for the asshole losers they are. Good luck finding work now their reputation is down the crapper! I'm sure this will damage them for the rest of their lives. And they finances? Karma! Their concept was easy, their sloppy con job was just pathetic.

It's nice to see when bad people go down.

If FreePay does indeed have 150 million NY e-mail addresses, and they owe $500 per e-mail, isn't that about $75 billion?

But before jumping to conclusions, let's wait for the judge to say.

Anyone know what the status of the management is at Gratis right now? How has the management changed? Are they still in business? What happened?

I work at the office that shares the floor with Gratis Internet. Last Friday (March 30, 2007) remaining employees were packing things up and signage was ripped off the walls. They're no more.
